The all-new Honda SM5 ECE 22.06/DOT helmet is designed to provide MX riders with a safe and purposefully engineered helmet for optimal protection and comfort. The lightweight Honda SM5 features a thermo-injected shell incorporating a special blend of polymers enhanced with varying degrees of thickness, designed to offer the optimal combination of impact protection and lightweight. The interior liner features a 7-piece expanded polystyrene (EPS) construction that includes five different densities of EPS designed to ensure the correct density in the right area for improved impact absorption.

Construction

• The lightweight outer shell is constructed of a technologically advanced impact-resistant thermoplastic in three anatomical shell sizes, plus three individual EPS liner sizes with a combination of liner and cheek pad to offer 6 unique sizes for the best fit and protection.

Main Features

• An engineered raised area with padding effectively reduces forces transmitted to the collarbone and a patented visor release system ensures the visor releases with the correct predefined amount of force, regardless of the angle of impact.
• Revised the lower shell volume of the medium, large, XL and 2XL to be approximately 3% larger to make the helmet easier to put on and take off, where the increased helmet volume has also improved impact management performance which is now 44% lower than the regular speed threshold.
• For the new ECE 22 standard.06, the SM5 achieves a regular velocity impact score 44% better than the current figure of 33%, as well as a low velocity linear impact score 32% better and a high velocity linear impact score 31% better than the prevailing standard.
• Multi-density inner liner to ensure the correct density in the right area for better impact absorption.
• New redesigned chin bar profile, where the base area has been specifically sculpted to provide a raised relief section to clear the collarbone, with a new softer EPS liner that extends beyond the helmet shell itself, and is covered by a more flexible rubber compound that provides a reduced chance of any type of injury to the collarbone.
• The patented visor release system ensures that the visor is released with the correct predefined amount of force, regardless of the angle of impact.
• Maximize ventilation and high levels of heat exchange thanks to multiple air intakes and exhaust ports.
• The visor is designed to direct air into the ports for improved airflow.
• Cheek pads with ERS emergency release system.
• Loops for mounting a hydration system.
• The ECE version of the Honda SM5 helmet weighs 1,350 grams for a size medium, and 1,420 grams for the ECE DOT version with shield.

Protection

• The internal and external surfaces are designed to minimize the effects of oblique impacts. To combat and mitigate these rotational impact forces, Alpinestars has designed a proprietary technology that creates a low-friction surface on the internal surface of the EPS liner. For the ECE 22.06 standard, which now includes oblique rotational impact assessment, the SM5 scores 70% below the new regulation.
